So, this game I have a mixed relationship with. It was the only other game my dad ever owned until someone in elementary school gave me all of their NES games. I can’t say exactly how this came to pass because I don’t remember.
More on those games later, another post. Super Mario Bros. 3 was one of the games I got there too.
Shit. I didn’t talk about Duck Hunt in the last post. I’ll give the Nintendo Zapper it’s own post I guess…
Anyway, Dad played this in his own time. I enjoyed watching him play some of the mini games. They were all full of vibrant colors and for a 3, 4, or 5 year old? That gets attention.
That surfing mini game was the absolute worst for me. When I was a kid I was absolutely terrified of that mini game. My dad loved going to the beach often to surf. There were a lot times in my childhood that I’d go along and my sister would come too before my baby sister was born.
It seems so stupid now though. Sure, there are sharks somewhere in the coast of PR but none were at the shores of the beaches he’d take me. The times when the surfer would wipe and there was no shark, I was perfectly fine. Heck, it was actually pretty relaxing.
When I was older, I’d dare say about 8-9(?), I actually played it and while I hated the shark sequence…no more bad reactions. I didn’t have another bad dream or gave it a bad thought ever again.
…Until I read a Fear Street that I swear it included something about a shark. NEVER AGAIN. (Book was called ‘Sunburn’ btw)
Anyway, now that I’m older, yeah, certain underwater things frighten me…like at least a giant portion of sea creatures in Subnautica. I don’t have nightmares about them anymore though…for now.
What about you? Any scares caused by your earlier gaming days?
