GNOG – Playing with a Box

So, Epic Games has had this habit of giving out games for free in their store. The other night while updating Fortnite to see the state of save the world, I saw that they had GNOG available for free. The highly colorful art drew my attention. I clicked through for the game info and this greeted me as the intro:

GNOG is a 3D puzzle game set in a tactile world of toys and secrets. Point, click, grab, poke, spin, pull, and play with uniquely charming monster heads as you explore the hidden worlds inside them. Filled with eye-catching designs, playful interactions, and a rich, reactive soundtrack, the hand-crafted heads come to life in either standard play or in VR.

The art in this game is FANTASTIC

I believe I have mentioned this before, I love puzzle games. I absolutely can get lost in them. The more time consuming the better honestly. The fact that I could play around with these levels to try and solve them.

It works actually. I started playing with mouse and keyboard but I ended up moving to a controller at a certain level in particular. Your basic buttons are left and right click. Right click to flip the box around and left click will trigger things. The controller scheme doesn’t involve a lot of additional options but being able to use the right stick to move the puzzle around helped plenty on a level I was confused with.

The purple level was probably one of the most eye catching levels for me by far but, I was stuck for a while on that one. This is where my controller came in handy. It was probably an oversight on my part how the solution was. Regardless, when I did complete it, it was very satisfying.

It was definitely a short experience, I was expecting that though. The levels, once you get a hang of how they work, give you very good clues as to how to solve them. The cooking one made me feel a bit stupid, but it was great! Completing all these puzzles was most definitely a delight.

I could’ve stayed up all night playing on Friday but I definitely needed to get to bed. I was burning myself out because I wanted to keep playing but I was really tired. Story of my life.

Should you play this? If you love puzzle games, absolutely. I can see why this game has been positively reviewed. It really was a refreshing, fun concept for me. I could keep going about the art. The vibrant colors struck me, the game is full of life, and every time I finished a level there was music.

I think you can guess why this level was also my favorite…STARS!

I’d like to thank Ko-Op for this game. It was a delight to play and I would love to see a follow up to this. The levels were all innovative and unique. It was fun to go from one level to the next and the hints were subtle enough for me to be able to catch them after taking a good hard look at what I was doing.

If you’d like to play the game for yourself, it’s still free on Epic Games but you can also find it on Steam!

Thanks so much for reading, until next time.
