I didn’t start with K-pop. I started with J-pop within Ani openings.
Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I’m going to talk about one of the few Japanese crushes that I’ve held throughout almost half of my life. I’d actually dare to say that I’ve been crushing on HYDE since I was 16.
Not the point. Anyway, he recently released a new solo album and it kinda just appeared on my suggestions in Apple Music. I didn’t even know it’d dropped. Heck, I didn’t even realize that one of the songs in the album is a cover of a song Mom overplayed in my childhood.
I can’t even tell you how many times mom played this. Dad did too for that matter. I really can’t tell you who played it more. Anyway, I was doing something and had this album as background noise when it dawned on me what I was listening to. To me, it is one of the best covers of this song I’ve heard. It find it to fit Hyde’s range.
The whole song just pulls a lot of emotion out of me. It’s more than the nostalgia from listening too much when I was kid. I think it’s more because of the lyrics. It’s always been hard hitting for me. I remember the dance remix I played in DDRMax too.
The album ‘Anti’ as a whole is very solid. The title track ‘Another Moment’ is brilliant. His voice has always been so unique to me from the moment I heard ‘Ready Steady Go’ back in my hardcore anime days. There’s this raspy and throaty feel to it. He also has never left his rock sound.
I generally tend to gravitate to his music when I write action sequences actually. it’s very peculiar. I hadn’t even noticed this pattern until very recently. It’s one of those artists that just suits the mood and my state of mind for these moments. I absolutely love it.
I can’t wait for HYDE to continue with his musical career. ‘Anti’ to me is a fantastic piece of work. Very cohesive and a fitting to the singles he’s been releasing for the last year. If you’ve been a fan of L’Arc~en~Ciel but hadn’t listened to his solo work, this is definitely a fantastic starting point.
Writing this post also has nothing to do with the fact that I was randomly jamming to ‘Vanilla’ by Gackt and ‘Another Moment’ while playing Overwatch the other day. Nada.
