Okay, so we’ve talked about how recession pop is back right? This feels like that.
Every time a K-pop artist drops a song fully in English, it’s a treat. This one is absolutely no exception and at this point, barely ten days since the album dropped and not even a week since we’ve been blessed by a Special Clip the likes of SM could NEVER give us fans…
I’m dead certain this is going to compete with a lot of the Sleep Token catalog for one of my most played songs of 2025.
One of the biggest things I’ve always loved about (G)I-dle as a group is the variety of vocal tones they showcase throughout their albums, singles, and the like. Minnie’s debut mini-album does wonders to show case some of that soft, sultry range that she’s been blessing us with since debut. While I haven’t been able to give her whole mini-album a listen as of me writing this, I cannot stress enough how wonderful it is to listen to ‘Obsession’ right now.
Ten has always been one of my favorite male vocalists within SM, and seeing him featured here was a nice surprise. I remember when the tracklist teaser image dropped a few weeks ago and I was already hyped at the Yuqi feature, and this just added more fuel to the fire.
Their voices blend so well here. It’s such a sweet, softly upbeat ballad number that hits all of the nostalgia notes for me. It reminds me a lot of the K-pop that got me into the genre. There’s the subtle guitar riff in the background that reminds me a little bit of Girls’ Day’s ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’, in a good way. Minnie’s voice sweeps you away as she sings about her obsession with her lover. Ten delivers in this duet, his voice soaring over the synth in the background.
The bridge to the final chorus for me absolutely delivers, building quickly and taking us into a final chorus where Ten’s vocal range shines through. To me this song is absolute perfection and will be an earworm for the foreseeable future.
I mean, it made me write a blog post about it. Hopefully I’ll be back more regularly on here to talk about books, music, and my own mental health journey.
Thanks for being here.
